 IASEP   Listserv Information

Purpose

The purpose of this list is to help facilitate communication between everyone using IASEP.  A listserv allows you to e-mail a message to a single listserv address (in this case, iasep-l@purdue.edu). The listserv then forwards a copy of your message to everyone who is currently subscribed to the list. Any one or more subscribers may respond to you via the list. Information and experiences can be shared across school districts. In this way, many can learn from the successes and mistakes of one.

Instructions

Please save these instructions for future reference, especially if you are not familiar with Majordomo. You should create a new mail folder for subscription confirmation messages like this one, and for the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list.

Note: All cases of -l that you see are a hyphen followed by a lower case L for "list".

Mailing List Etiquette

*If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting, be sure you summarize the original at the top of the message, or include just enough text of the original to give a context. This will make sure readers understand when they start to read your response. Giving context helps everyone. Please do not include the entire original message if it was lengthy!

*When you reply to a message someone has posted on the list, you need to give some thought as to where you send the reply. If it is a personal reply, or only of interest to a very few people, then you should send the reply directly back to the individual that posted the message. If you believe your reply would be of interest to more than a very few of the list subscribers, then you should send it to the list.

*Be careful when you reply to messages or postings. Frequently replies are sent back to the address that originated the post - which in many cases is the address of the list or group! You may accidentally send a personal response to a great many people, embarrassing all involved. It is best to type in the address instead of relying on "reply".

*If you should find yourself in a disagreement with one person, make your responses to each other via private e-mail rather than continue to send messages to the list or group. If you are debating a point on which the group might have some interest, you may summarize for them later.

*Avoid distributing documents as attachments to the list. Instead, try one of these two methods for distributing the information. 1. Copy the text from the original file and paste it into an e-mail message. OR 2. If there is more than plain text that needs to be communicated (images, fonts, etc.), place the documents on a web server and send the URL only, via e-mail. The list owner is available to help with this process. For more information on this topic, see
