The lists are provided for the reader to use as a starting place for research. The lists for each state are not exhaustive, and we do not guarantee that the statutes are current.  However, they do give readers an idea of the kinds of statutes that states may have on their books.

ch. 69 § 1l (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

School district; student records.
Summary: See the sixth paragraph of the opening paragraphs which states the requirement that each school district maintain individual records on all students and assign each record a confidential identification number.


ch. 71 § 34D (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

Board of Education; student records.

Summary: See all of statute which states that the board of education will adopt regulations regarding the handling of all student records by elementary and secondary schools. It also stipulates the rights of parents and guardians of pupils to inspect records.


ch. 71 § 34E (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

Inspection of student records.

Summary: See opening paragraph of statute regarding access to student records by a parent, guardian, or student.


ch. 71 § 38R (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

Access to criminal records; applicants for school positions.

Summary: See all of statute which gives all school committees, superintendents, and principals the right to access the criminal

records of any applicant for a school job or position.

ch. 71 § 87 (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

Removal of I.Q. tests; student records.

Summary: See all of statute requiring the removal of any group intelligence test score at the end of the school year in which the test was taken.


ch. 71B § 3 (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

Children with Special Needs; student records.

Summary: See paragraphs 8 and 11 regarding the maintenance and accessibility of the records of children in special education.


ch. 72 § 2 (Annotated Laws of Massachusetts)

Registration of certain minors.

Summary: See all of statute which gives school committees the rights to record information on minors between the ages of 5 and 16 who don't meet the requirements for the completion of the sixth grade. It states punishments for withholding information or making false statements.
